Michael is Counsel to the firm and is an accomplished tax lawyer, providing tax planning and estate planning advice, as well as tax dispute resolution advice, to individual and corporate clients including owner-operated private companies and family businesses.

Michael’s extensive experience includes tax structuring for business owners, for professionals and for other individuals regarding the establishment of businesses (including professional corporations), corporate reorganizations (including “estate freeze” reorganizations), personal tax and estate planning strategies (including the creation of trusts and the preparation of wills & powers of attorney), business succession arrangements, the purchase and sale of businesses, and the establishment of charitable foundations and not-for-profit corporations; as well as preparing tax opinions and representing clients in tax disputes and tax litigation (including appeals to tax courts).

Accountants, investment advisers, wealth managers, insurance advisers and other lawyers regularly refer clients to Michael for sophisticated yet practical corporate tax and/or personal tax planning advice, as well as for estate planning advice, and for the preparation of the documentation required to implement his recommendations.   Michael is known in the business community and the investment community as a client-oriented lawyer who focuses on structuring and implementing tax-effective solutions to complex business situations and to diverse inter-generational estate planning situations, as well as providing effective representation for individual and corporate clients in tax disputes and tax litigation – and who strives to ensure that optimal results are delivered for clients’ benefit.

Prior to joining SimpsonWigle LAW LLP, Michael practiced at leading Toronto law firms for many years and advised a wide range of clients, which included business owners, professionals, investors, entrepreneurs and other individuals, as well as not-for-profit organizations and charitable foundations.   He also taught taxation courses for several years at Queens University Law School, as well as instructing in taxation, estate planning and business law courses at the Ontario Bar Admission Course.
